Patterson awarded citizen of year, Mardis recognized

WEST LAFAYETTE – Former Mayor of West Lafayette Jack Patterson was awarded the Citizen of the Year Award at the annual West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce dinner held at the First Baptist Church in West Lafayette on Tuesday evening, April 26. The meal was served by Schumaker Farms with around 50 in attendance.
Chamber President Oren Griffith said that, “We (West Lafayette) may be small in stature, but we are large in heart.”
Plans were announced for the homecoming, which will be held on July 28, 29 and 30 with the theme being, “Coal is King.” George Leech, who worked in the coal mines for 35 years, will serve as the Parade Grand Marshall.
Eric Taggert talked about events at the library and everyone in attendance introduced themselves including the West Lafayette Homecoming Court. The queen and her court were each presented with a white rose and applauded for their contribution to the village during their reign.
Terry Mardis, who retired as the Chief of Police in February of this year after serving for 11 years, was presented with a Meritorious Service plaque.
Newly elected Mayor of West Lafayette Steve Bordenkircher presented both Patterson and Mardis with a proclamation and said, “I love living here and consider it a privilege to be your mayor. I appreciate all that you do on behalf of our community and would like to recognize these two people on behalf of the village.”
Mardis said of the award, “It’s a very proud honor because West Lafayette is a great town and the people in it are just outstanding.”
Patterson said, “It is quite an honor to receive this. A total surprise. I am very, very pleased with the honors that I received. I had a lot of time devoted to the village of West Lafayette and now this makes me feel really good that they have honored me this way. I feel real good.”
