COTC to hold free summer workshops for kids
NEWARK – Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) is accepting registrations for CollegeASPIRE workshops for summer 2016. These workshops offer community youth the opportunity to choose from faculty-led, hands on workshops designed to provide students with engaging activities on a college campus. All summer workshops at the COTC campuses are being held Monday through Friday, June 13 – 17, from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 5 p.m. daily.
COTC Newark Campus: The Culinary Science Jr. morning session workshop will focus on what it’s like to become a chef for a week. Students will discover their inner foodie through this hands-on creative cooking workshop for ages 10 to 14. Culinary Science will also be offered for ages 14 to 18 in the afternoon session. Crimes & Clues will test ages 14 to 18 year olds’ investigative skills in this morning session forensics science workshop where students will figure out who done it. They will learn how to process the crime scene, create impression casting, fingerprint and much more! Fourteen to 18 year olds can race to the finish line in the mechanical engineering workshop, MechaCraze. It will be held during the afternoon session. Students will build their own car and compete for 1st place at the CollegeASPIRE Open House. Also offered for ages 14 to 18 is the afternoon session Brace Yourself! They will learn what it takes to make buildings and bridges strong. Using fun software and everyday materials, this workshop will test their skills to the breaking point as students will design and test bridges and structures. Students will participate in the ultimate “bridge masher” showdown at the Open House.
COTC Knox Campus: The Medical Madness workshop will provide a glimpse into the life of a first responder. For ages 14 to 18, this workshop will show students what to do if they are the first person on the scene. They will also earn their First Aid and CPR certifications. Frozen Motion, for ages 11 to 14, will also be held at the Knox Campus. Students will create their own warrior, wizard, mermaid or kindly beast as they learn to transform ideas from sketch to a final pencil drawing for their portfolio. Ages 14 to 18 can also participate in Go Green! They will learn how to make electrical and solar circuits, increase voltage and current and how to use solar power to produce energy for a radio, calculator, battery charger, and much more in this engineering workshop! All Knox campus workshops will be afternoon sessions.
COTC Coshocton Campus: students can express their artistic side by taking photos and exploring Photoshop in the Photobomb! workshop for ages 11 to 14. Embrace Your Selfie will also be offered at the Coshocton Campus for ages 14 to 18. Students can kick start their own career by embracing their entrepreneurial spirit through the creation of their own venture plan that showcases their skills, strengths, and self-awareness of the world around them. All Coshocton campus workshops will be afternoon sessions.
COTC Pataskala Campus: Crimes & Clues Jr. will test ages 11 to 14 year olds’ investigative skills in this forensics science workshop. Students can express their artistic side by taking photos and exploring Photoshop in the Photobomb! workshop for ages 14 to 18. Both Pataskala campus workshops will be afternoon sessions.
If students are selected as the Shooting Star in their workshop, they will receive a $1,000 scholarship to COTC. The main purpose of CollegeASPIRE is to demonstrate to both students and their families that college is accessible in their community and possible regardless of their circumstances. Parents and guardians interested in learning more about college preparation, admissions, financial aid and earning free college credit in high school are invited to attend a free, two-hour CollegeASPIRE: The Next Step Session on each of the COTC campuses during the workshop week from 1-3 p.m. RSVP by selecting this option on your participant’s application.
Free transportation is available within 15 miles of selected workshops located at the Knox, Coshocton and Pataskala campuses. Plus, mark your calendars for Saturday, June 18, 2016, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the John Gilbert Reese Centeron the Newark campus for the CollegeASPIRE Open House featuring students work from throughout the week.
