Kindergarteners explore careers at CCCC

COSHOCTON – It’s never too early to start thinking about what you want to be when you grow up.

Kindergarten students from Ridgewood Elementary visited the Coshocton County Career Center on May 3 and had the opportunity to learn about all 11 programs offered there.

“It’s fun to teach them stuff,” said Tabby Albaugh, a junior in the culinary arts program.

The kindergarteners toured the natural resources, criminal justice, electronics, auto tech, building trades and metal fabrication labs and then did hands-on sessions with culinary arts, cosmetology, early childhood, medical careers, and career skills investigation students.

“We have fun and usually learn a lot about them as well,” said Ashley Untied, another junior taking culinary arts.

She, Albaugh and Emily Stotts, who also is a culinary arts junior, helped set up an area for the kindergarteners to decorate cookies with icing and sprinkles.

Kindergartener Sebastian Calvo said his cookie was pretty good, but his favorite part of the day was their time in the electronics lab.

“I like the robots,” he said. “They grab stuff and you can control them.”

The robots also were a hit with Calvo’s classmate Aiden Mackenzie.

“One tried to pinch my leg,” Mackenzie said.

Another hands-on activity gave the kindergarteners the chance to get manicures.

At that station Thayah Cabot was enjoying getting her fingernails painted red by Peyton Taylor, a junior in the cosmetology program.

“I love kids and love what I do,” Taylor said.

The kindergarteners were led to their different sessions by career center student ambassadors, who have served as reading buddies at Ridgewood Elementary. Brian Crilow, from Coshocton CARES College Access Program, helped coordinate both program. He said the students have chatted about careers and this gave the younger once the chance to see what their reading buddies were studying.

“This is a nice opportunity for them to explore their interests and grow,” said Lori Buchanan, a kindergarten teacher at Ridgewood.
