When you read this another Fourth of July will be in the books and all that remains will be the remnants of some hamburger buns, left over celebratory cake or pie and some errant cherry bombs. Even the Cicadas are supposed to be out of here! Thank goodness.
I hope you enjoyed some fireworks whether right here at home from the airport – what a great vantage point to have this event – or watching a neighbor – that did everything by the book. It would need to be mentioned that appreciation should go out to all those that made the fireworks possible and to the folks that did the launching. I am not sure if that is the right word for setting off fireworks.
The Indians are on a tear of late – having won 13 – oh, there’s that number – in a row as of Friday, July 1. Let’s hope that streak continues. The Red legs and Bucs are struggling. The Reds more than the Pirates if that is any consolation for Pirate fans. The Cubs are rolling. The Tribe is in pursuit of a club record 14th win as I write this column (Friday, July 1). Well, actually in a few hours versus the Blue Jays and that continues through Sunday. Then the Tigers come to town on the Fourth of July. Go Tribe!
The Broadway musical “Hamilton” is sweeping the nation in frenzy. According to the official website for this American Musical – tickets are very limited. Rumor is that it will be coming to Cleveland. The winner of 11 Tony Awards, “Hamilton” is based on the book by Ron Chernow and is a New York Times bestseller. It seemed appropriate to mention the musical and the book about this American hero that has been mostly overshadowed by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and others.
Founding Father Hamilton came from humble beginnings and rose to be our first Secretary of the Treasury and wrote the Federalist Papers that – hopefully –are still a part of high school history or government class. Unlike Jefferson and Adams who both lived to a ripe old age – Hamilton died at 49 – leaving his legacy to be written about by his enemies – who just so happen to be some of the same names mentioned previously. I think I will be reading this book – along with David McCullough’s recently released “The Wright Brothers.” As an extra morsel for the history buffs – Jefferson and John Adams both died on July 4, 1826 – a few hours apart and on the 50th anniversary of America’s Independence.
