Mark’s Musings – August 31, 2016
I have discovered two words that should never be combined – at least in my opinion. “Veggie and burger”. Nope. Not ever. Give me the real beef any day. Now, I am sure that somewhere out there in this big ol’ world there exists a decent tasting “veggie burger”. The turkey ones are okay, but just okay. Let me know if you have found some tasty ones and I will take your suggestion to heart. Literally.
The community has stepped up big time to make the restoration at Stewart Field a reality. It’s a gorgeous field and the Redskins made the debut memorable with a 38-0 win over the Fairless Falcons – the same team that they lost to last year in the first game.
The pre-game ceremony honored those that have contributed financially and otherwise to make this three year dream a reality. Nicely done folks, very nicely done.
The pre-season number six Buckeyes open their season this Saturday at high noon against the Falcons of Bowling Green. I am going out on a limb here and predict that the Buckeyes will win by the very same score that the Redskins did against their Falcon opponent – 38-0. Predictions later in the season will get more challenging – especially the one against Oklahoma, ranked number three. Pre-season of course.
What is happening locally? Lots. First up is the final First Friday event of the year – this Friday, Sept. 2, followed by the Appalachian Bacon Nation Festival on Saturday, Sept. 10. That event is followed by the Wings Over Coshocton Air Show – a grand two day event this year – held the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17 and 18 at Richard Downing Airport. It takes a momentous amount of effort to make these events happen in our community and a lot of volunteer hours. When you see one of the folks involved be sure to say “Thank You” for a job well done.
Community events just do not happen without someone leading the charge. In many cases this could be several individuals but there is typically one person that takes the lead to make things happen. Thanks to their willingness to serve the greater community we have a lot of things to do here in Coshocton County.
Practically on the heels of the air show is the grand-daddy event of our community – the Coshocton County Fair – starting Friday, Sept. 30 through Thursday, Oct. 6. This is the 165th annual county fair. Wow. That’s a lot of cotton candy for sure.
So September looks to be quite the busy month as we turn the corner from a very hot summer – they say the hottest summer on record – into fall. Personally, fall is my favorite season.
No one will catch the Cubs this year – with five weeks to go in the major league season the boys from Chicago are 14 games up. They have a very good chance of making a strong post season performance. The Indians struggled a bit against a likely post season opponent – the Texas Rangers. Losing two in a row to the pretty sure eventual American League West champs – the Tribe will need to have their “A+” game to match up against Texas in the post season.
