Flying Pig Farm

Fall is my favorite time of year to make comfort food. Have you tried our pastured non-GMO chicken? Roast a whole bird for an easy weekend meal, then shred the leftover meat for quick weekday meals… casseroles, soups or sandwiches! We also have whole chickens that are already cut into pieces, which makes frying chicken a breeze. We’ve noticed a big difference in flavor! Don’t forget our grass fed beef as well. Thanks for shopping local!

Our Garden

Our Garden having received hard frosts every night this past weekend, last of the sweet bell and hot peppers were picked. It took some time for that accomplishment as there were an abundance of peppers. Big ones too! This will be the last opportunity to get any to freeze or roast till next summer. Where else could you get any that are fresh and organically grown local for you. If you want a larger quantity, just place an order through Local Bounty or ourgarden.eatfromfarms.comwebsite by Wednesday for delivery to the store Thursday.

Lettuce greens, mustards, kales, Swiss chards, and collards are still doing well because of our farming practices.  We can still offer broccoli, Brussels sprouts, beets, kohlrabi, leeks, and some cauliflower too!  Herbs as sage, parsley, mints (7 kinds), and chives can be ordered.

Lastly, blue, peanut, and pie pumpkins are running short, the blue and peanut ones make lots of pumpkin puree for soups, smoothies, muffins, and pies. Try making from scratch your own with your children so they see where they come from and leave the preservatives behind. Families that cook together enjoy the fruits of their labors and the love for great food!

Thank you once again, and remember, the season is not over until it freezes over!

Bob’s Pickle Patch/ Verda’s Hens

It’s that crazy chicken math again!  It seems that the more chickens you have, the more you get.  We now have 43 newbies in brooder boxes in our basement.  These will be layers in the spring.  It’s OK to count them now because they are already hatched.  We also have one grown up Easter egger girl that got into trouble with her coop mates and has to be in a dog cage in the basement until her tail feathers grow back out.  She’s making good progress.

There are at least three kinds of chicken owners:

  1. The ones that make pets of everyone, buy them treats, give them each a unique name, and mourn woefully whenever a predator takes one.
  2. The ones who treat chickens with respect, allowing them to do all the things that chickens love to do, like scratch up mulch, dig up worms, and run around outside till dusk; but do not hold them or sing them lullabies.
  3. Then there are the factory farm chicken owners who do despicable things to chickens, which will not even be described in this newsletter — ugh!

So where are my hens in this list?  Verda’s hens are somewhere in between number 1 and 2.  We have over 150 chickens, so that makes the unique name thing quite difficult. But I do have a few that have earned a name due to their different looks or personality.  Yes, chickens do have personalities.  I am definitely not in the third category.

We will try our best to keep you all supplied with fresh eggs through the winter.

Thanks for shopping at Local Bounty

Mullet Apiaries

Mullet Apiaries – The girls are now huddled up in the colder weather. We’ll see how they get through the winter that is coming. In the meanwhile, we have some of the honey they graciously provided on the shelf at Local Bounty, including our cute little two oz. bears, perfect for sticking in a holiday gift box. In the next few weeks we will begin having gift packs available. Did you know a bee’s brain is only about the size of a sesame seed, yet it has an amazing learning and memory capacities. It is able to make complex calculations on distance travelled and foraging efficiency. Bees are fascinating! Thank you for your business.
