Kiwanis Track & Field youth day enjoyed by all
COSHOCTON – Sara Williams, Izzy Ferrell and Jayme Baker were pretty happy to be sporting ribbons from Kiwanis Track & Field Day.
Williams, a fifth grader at Warsaw Elementary School, won her third place ribbon in a running event, but said basketball is actually her favorite activity.
The 23rd Kiwanis Track & Field Day was held March 30 at Kids America. The event included students from Warsaw Elementary, Hopewell School, River View High School, Ridgewood High School, Ridgewood Elementary, Coshocton Elementary, Newcomerstown West, Newcomerstown Middle School, River View Junior High, Coshocton High School, Newcomerstown High School and Ridgewood Middle School.
This was Williams’ second year competing at the event, but Ferrell’s first.
“I got first place in the race and it made me feel good,” said Ferrell, who is a fourth grader at Warsaw Elementary.
In addition to track events the students also competed in a hoop shoot, cornhole, football toss and soccer shoot out.
Baker earned a first place ribbon in his race and said the Kiwanis Track & Field Day is an event he looks forward to.
“I like all the games and the exercising,” said Baker, who is in the fourth grade at Warsaw Elementary.
Another Warsaw Elementary student who earned a ribbon was third grader Scanlon Yoder.
He plays basketball in the Upward league at Perry Chapel so he was ready for the hoop shoot which he took first place in.
“It was fun,” Yoder said. “I enjoy basketball.”
Nasya Asire and Rachel Brady passed out programs at the beginning of the day and were looking forward to volunteering at the event with their fellow Coshocton High School Key Club members.
“I like going around and seeing all the people and helping them,” said Asire, who is a junior at CHS.
This is her second year volunteering and Brady’s first.
“I think it’s going to be fun seeing everybody happy and excited,” said Brady, who also is a junior at CHS.
Nancy Dickerson, a teacher at River View High School, enjoys coming to the event to cheer her students on.
“This is a good social activity for them and it gets them out to be active and participating on a level playing field,” she said. “It’s beautiful to watch them.”
Nikki Crabtree, a preschool teacher at Hopewell, also enjoys watching her students experience track and field day. Her classroom assistant Betina Scott added that they can learn a lot from the day.
“I hope they learn how to participate, get along with each other and have fun,” she said. “It’s also a chance to learn good sportsmanship.”
Andrea Walsh and her husband were glad their daughter Sophia Walsh had the opportunity to attend the event with her Hopewell preschool class.
“She’s really come out of her shell since starting at Hopewell and I’m glad she gets exposed to various individuals,” Andrea said.
