RVHS choir students earn superior at state competition
WARSAW – River View High School’s Chamber Choir competed in the Ohio Music Education Association’s State Level Competition at Massillon Jackson High School on April 21, and earned a superior rating. This is the first time in school history that the choir has competed in Class A, and earned a superior rating at the state level. In 1983, the choir also earned a superior rating in Class C. The classes are based on the music’s difficulty.
The Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) is a state level of National Association of Music Education (NAfME). “Since 1907, NAfME has worked to ensure that every student has access to a well-balanced, comprehensive, and high-quality program of music instruction taught by qualified teachers.” River View High School’s music department is very active within the organization, and believes in the high standards that it sets before the student. In order to compete in the state competition, groups must first earn a superior at the district Level. River View Chamber Choir met that goal on March 11, at Granville High School.
In preparation for Friday night’s performance, students prepared both musically and mentally. Each student had a “State Buddy” who secretly shared notes of encouragement throughout the week. River View High School’s Spirit Club decorated the music hallway which also added to the excitement. Parents also got involved by sending flowers and notes of encouragement to the students on “flower day.” The choir’s theme for the week was to be “strong and courageous…and to sing audaciously!” When the superior rating was posted, the cheers, tears, and applause reaffirmed that the choir’s hard work and determination had paid off.
“I am so grateful for the hard work, and shared vision from each of the students. I am also thankful for the community members and families who have supported the choir throughout this process. It has been a long wait to celebrate this accomplishment, and I am so happy to share it with this year’s chamber choir,” said Dawn Anglin, director of choirs at River View Local Schools, grades 7-12.
