COSHOCTON – Students from Jon McFarland’s Champion Martial Arts classes took turns breaking boards with messages written by area cancer survivors on Saturday morning, May 13 at the fairgrounds during the 22nd annual Relay for Life event.
Students used their hands and feet to snap the boards after Tracy Barnhouse, ACS Staff Partner for Coshocton County read the message on the board. Cancer survivors wrote the messages on the boards at the annual survivor’s dinner held earlier this spring at Lake Park Pavilion.
One of the boards held special meaning for McFarland, who said about the experience, “Our students were excited about coming. When I told them it was for the Relay For Life, those that have survived and those that we have lost, they were ready. I lost my Grandma to cancer – and my mom was only 16 when she passed away so I never got to meet my Grandma – I took that board up to my mom’s last night and had her sign it.”
“Several of our students had boards with messages from their family members on them. They were real proud to break those boards. Breaking something, the memories, it made them proud to break a board for the family and for the survivors.”
