Getting students ready for summer reading

| May 23, 2017

008COSHOCTON – Students at Coshocton Elementary were visited by a squirrelly wolf and an out-of-town construction worker on Tuesday, May 23 during a special assembly to highlight the upcoming summer reading program at the Coshocton Public Library and the West Lafayette Branch Library. The wolf, played by Cindy Shutt, was looking for a snack when she met a construction worker, Debra Crowdy, who told the wolf she had just built a house made of straw and another house made of sticks for three little piggys.

Near the end of the program, Crowdy told the wolf all about the summer reading program at the library. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World” and children can sign up at either county library for a chance to win prizes donated by area businesses.

Each participant has to read a minimum of five hours to get an entry form for the program. Each hour that the child reads is marked off on the form and returned to the library for a chance to win prizes.

“I’ve been asked if you have to read all five hours at one time,” said Crowdy to the students. “I’ve been asked if you have to read at the library. You can read anywhere you want. All you have to do is read for 15 minutes at a time and mark off that time on the sheet for a chance to win.”

Other than reading this summer, both the Coshocton Public Library and the West Lafayette Branch Library have programs throughout the summer that go along with the summer reading theme. Events include a Dream Builders Club, COSI on Wheels on June 12 at the First Baptist Church in West Lafayette, 3D art projects where participants will build a bridge and The Eiffel Tower, and an appearance by The Vanderveer Brothers String Band on June 14 at the Coshocton Library.
