CCYL Class of 2018 attends opening retreat
CAMBRIDGE – On July 16 and 17, the Coshocton County Youth Leadership (CCYL) Class of 2018 took part in its opening retreat. This retreat took place at Salt Fork Lodge and was facilitated by Shelly Payne and Rese Jhordan. They created great lessons and activities that helped my fellow members and me strengthen our leadership skills.
During one of our lessons, we practiced the types of skills that leaders do well, such as eye contact, speaking in front of a group, and the proper way to give a handshake. We also learned the different types of leaders and which type of leader that we are. We then learned how different types of leaders need to work together to form an unstoppable group of positive leadership skills. The retreat facilitators taught us about trust, servant leadership, organization, and many other positive qualities. To help us understand trust, we participated in a few different activities where at least one person, if not all, were blindfolded. Although these activities were difficult, they were great learning experiences for all of us.
The most meaningful part of our retreat was our service project. This year’s CCYL members worked together to improve the current landscaping in one area of the lodge. This project included pulling weeds, planting flowers, and spreading mulch throughout the area. In doing this, we learned how to work as a group and incorporate the leadership qualities that we were learning during the retreat. The CCYL Class of 2018 would like to thank Betsy Gosnell for arranging this retreat. We would also like to thank Shelly Payne, Rese Jhordan, Mike Gottwalt, Scott Frank, the Salt Fork staff, and the Coshocton Foundation for making this retreat possible.
