Wet First Friday draws huge crowd

COSHOCTON – Four year old Leigha had the right idea about the First Friday event held on Aug. 4. She thought the best part of the evening was splashing in the puddles while her mom, Sara Hinkle, watched and cautioned her not to get anyone around her wet. Rain may have started the evening, but, like Leigha, everyone was having a wonderful time.
Storms blew through the area at the beginning of the event and again a little while later, but the excitement for the Farm First Friday was contagious. Children squealed as they got to climb on huge farm equipment and pet a donkey, goat, sheep or calf. Children were given a card when they arrived. Each station they visited would stamp the card and once they had 10 stamps, they could trade their card for a cool treat from Whit’s.
Antique tractors were also on display, including a pink one in honor of breast cancer survivors. Visitors could also see a working bee hive or have their picture taken in a farm scene. Many local farms and businesses had displays and were available to answer questions.
One of the highlights of the evening was the kids’ tractor pull. Children were divided into classes by weight and competed to see who could pedal their tractor all the way to the end. Each child received a ribbon for their efforts and prizes, including Coshocton County fair passes, coloring books and cups, were given to first through third place in each class. First place also received a trophy.
Georgina Richards brought her two boys to the First Friday event. “We like First Fridays, but this one (farm) is one we try never to miss. The boys love everything about it.” Richards was cheering for her sons as they competed in the children’s tractor pull. “This is the highlight of the night for them.” Six year old Wyatt placed first in his class, while Waylon, 3, finished third in his. Both boys were excited with their prizes.
The last First Friday event for 2017 will be held Sept. 1.
