2017 Redskins ready to make a name for themselves
COSHOCTON – Coshocton High School’s football team had a magical 2016 season going 12-2 and making it to the final four in the state playoffs, but they are ready to move on and focus on a new beginning.
“We’ve talked at great lengths about that and even brought it up at our Chief’s dinner,” said Head Coach Jim Woodrum. “Marty Arganbright (a former CHS coach) came back to speak at the dinner and talked to the kids about making a name for themselves. I’ve also talked to the seniors a lot about whether they want to be remembered as part of a really good team their junior team or a great team as a senior.”
So far, Woodrum is pleased with the way his 2017 Redskins have responded.
“We had a great scrimmage against Danville,” he said. “We have a lot of young kids, but they played important roles on the team last year.”
Woodrum also knows he can count on his group of 12 seniors.
“They’ve played a lot on both sides of the football,” he said. “They are a really great class and have tremendous work ethic.”
The seniors also have good leadership skills.
“We voted on our captains, but all the seniors, not just the captains are great leaders,” Woodrum said. “They are taking on that role and are solid program guys.”
Coshocton opens its season with a 7 p.m. home game on Friday, Aug. 25 against Indian Valley, one of five new opponents they will face.
The other new teams on the schedule include Ridgewood, Lucas, Maysville and Philo, but Woodrum said they aren’t doing anything special to prepare for them.
“We’ve been doing the same old, same old and running the same offense for at least 30 years,” he said.
Claymont, Cambridge, New Lexington, Meadowbrook and River View round out the Redskins’ 2017 schedule.
“The kids are excited about picking up Ridgewood again, Indian Valley has a good football team and Claymont I believe returns 20 seniors, but our goal is to stay focused against everyone.”
Woodrum will be assisted by Steve Smith, Jason Minosky, Alex Ballentine, Judd Baker, Josh Coffman and Tim Fortney.
“We want to get off to a fast start,” Woodrum said. “If we get that we will build confidence and be in good shape.”
