Schools use football rivalry to help hurricane victims

WEST LAFAYETTE – Ridgewood and Coshocton picked up their football rivalry for the first time in several years, but there was more to the Sept. 8 game than bragging rights.
The Varsity C Club at Coshocton High School and the Teen Institute group at Ridgewood High School joined forces to raise money to be donated to Hurricane Harvey flood victims.
“Since we were renewing a football rivalry, we thought it would be good for our students to collaborate towards a common cause/goal,” said Amy Borton, from CHS.
Varsity C also held a bake sale at CHS and Ridgewood collected money every morning prior to the game. Students from both clubs then worked together at the football game held at Ridgewood High School to collect money at the gates prior to the game.
“I just like helping people,” said Rylee Young, a student at Ridgewood High School. “It’s rewarding to know you are helping others.”
She was collecting donations at the game with fellow Ridgewood student Hannah Hayes and Coshocton High School students Brody Hammersley and Spencer Wolfe.
“This is a bit of a competition between both schools, but what’s important is that we are helping a good cause,” Wolfe said.
The grand total collected by Ridgewood and Coshocton was $1,329.38. All donations collected will be given to the Houston Independent School District Foundation.
“We decided on Houston Independent School District because they have a fund set up in their school’s foundation to directly help teachers and students,” Borton said. “Our students will be helping other students.”
