Coshocton City Schools experience external lockdown
COSHOCTON – Coshocton City Schools were on external lockdown the morning of Sept. 14 following a recommendation from the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office.
“Apparently there was an armed robbery in Newcomerstown and three suspects were seen in the area of 14th Street,” said Kathy Carter-Robbins, director of curriculum and learning for Coshocton City Schools. “At the time the sheriff’s office suggested we go on external lockdown, the high school students had already been admitted to the building. Elementary students were already in route so we deterred students and staff from being admitted to their building. We really wanted to keep anyone who wasn’t already there (at the elementary school) away.”
Coshocton High School and elementary were placed on lock down at 7:23 a.m. due to the proximity of the suspects to the schools. According to Robbins, the school district received an all clear from the sheriff’s office around 8:32 a.m.
Coshocton County Sheriff Tim Rogers said the three suspects were apprehended and residents by the high school could go off of high alert. The three suspects believed to have held an armed robbery the evening of Sept. 13 at the Touraine Club in Newcomerstown.
The sheriff’s office released a press release stating that the Newcomerstown Police Department requested the assistance of its office in connection with an investigation stemming from an armed robbery in their village. Deputies from Coshocton responded to the 1400 block of South 14 Street in search of three individuals. All three suspects were at the residence and fled on foot. After a short pursuit, one male suspect was taken into custody. A female suspect was taken into custody near the residence. The final male suspect was later found by the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit in a wooded area nearby. All suspects were taken into custody without incident.
Coshocton City Schools sent out an all call message right around 9 a.m. that the elementary school was going to start at 10 a.m., one hour later than normal. Buses ran about an hour and 15 minutes behind their typical schedule, but breakfast was still served to students at the elementary school.
“Coshocton City Schools really appreciates the support of the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office and the cooperation of our parents to make sure we all work together to keep our kids safe,” Carter-Robbins said.
Assisting in the events were the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit, detectives, the Coshocton City Fire Department and the Coshocton County Dog Warden. The Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office will continue assisting Newcomerstown Police Department with the investigation as needed.
