Siblings get involved in goat show
COSHOCTON – Taylor Hahn and her goat Pickles calmly waited outside in the sunshine for the junior fair goat show to start on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 30 at the Coshocton County Fair.
Her sister has shown goats for two years and she decided to give them a try.
“I enjoyed helping her walk them and bathe them,” said Hahn, who is a member of the This-N-That 4-H Club.
Hahn’s father, Travis Hahn said Taylor was going to compete in the fun class.
“They just walk them around so they know what to expect when they get older,” he said. “4-H is a good program and it’s not just about animals. You don’t have to live on a hundred acre farm to do it.”
Jacob Shepler also got into showing goats because of a sibling and has now been doing it for two years.
“She (my sister) showed pet ones and I decided to do market ones,” Shepler said. “I enjoy working with the goats because they each have a different personality.”
He prepared for the goat show by shaving his goats, washing them, walking them and practicing setting their feet.
“I get nervous in the show ring, but I think I’m going to do decent out there,” Shepler said.
He brought two goats to the fair with him and they were in a pen right next to his sister’s two goats.
“I do the breeding class so I don’t have to sell them,” said Savannah Shepler, Jacob’s sister.
This is her third year working with goats.
“They are always fun to play with,” Savannah said.
The Shepler siblings are both members of the Good-Times 4-H Club and Jacob said for anyone interested in showing an animal at next year’s fair, “Find something you like to do.”
