Raising rabbits enjoyable but hard work
COSHOCTON – The rabbit barn was busy Monday morning, Oct. 2 as 4-H members readied their rabbits for the rabbit show at the Coshocton County Fair.
“I like raising rabbits because they’re adorable and really soft,” said Alexia Woodring as she prepared her New Zealand rabbit Sydney for judging.
Woodring is 10 years old and a member of Millfork Valley 4-H Club.
“You have to work with them and check and see if they have any mites,” she said about getting them ready for the judges.
Larsyn Holdsworth, age 9 and also a member of Millfork Valley 4-H Club, was in the rabbit barn early Monday morning readying her New Zealand rabbit, Pickle for judging.
“They’re so soft and I just like playing with them,” she said about raising rabbits. “I love animals.”
Holdsworth said she has learned a lot since she started raising rabbits. She said that they must have fresh water and food every day and that their fur must be clean, especially just before showing. They also require a lot of play time.
“I’ve learned how to flip them and take care of them,” said Holdsworth. “You also learn what they eat and what kind of fur they have.”
This is Caleb Dille’s first year raising rabbits. He was in the rabbit barn getting his rabbit Thunder ready for judging.
“I wanted to try something new,” said Dille. “I’ve done cooking and goats before, but I wanted to try rabbits this year.”
Dille said that to care for Thunder, he has fed and given him fresh water every day and played with him every day as well.
“It’s a lot harder than it looks,” he said about raising rabbits. “I think I’m ready to go back to cooking.”
