Mark’s Musings – October 4, 2017
It’s been a fantastic fair with only a day or so to go – depending on when you read your copy of The Beacon – until the 166th annual Coshocton County Fair is a wrap. The final evening of the fair is always a good one with the junior fair livestock auction. Our youngsters have worked hard throughout the year raising and caring for their livestock projects and deserve our support. That support is typically strong with local businesses, organizations, individuals and family members coming out to support area 4-H and FFA youth. Come on out to the Junior Fair Livestock Auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Hunter Arena.
Thanks to everyone that stopped by The Coshocton County Beacon booth who told us how much you like the paper. It is appreciated. Beacon readership is at an all-time high and continues to climb each week. Our mission to provide the community with a locally owned paper containing local news, photos and features is why we do what we do. Your thoughtful comments and words of encouragement and thanks are what keep us going. The hundreds of advertisers that support The Beacon are what allow us to continue serving the people of Coshocton County. Thank you.
You couldn’t ask for better weather at this year’s county fair. Warm daytime temperatures, cool evenings and sunny skies all point to large crowds of adults and youngsters having fun on the rides, going through the various exhibits, barns and buildings while also enjoying some delicious fair food and family time. The fair is more than the rides, food and exhibits though. It is also an opportunity for many of us to catch up with old friends, make new acquaintances and just chat.
Maybe about the Buckeyes – who have a couple more easy games then the schedule ramps up a level or three or four. Or maybe the Indians – who, it seems, have more of a challenge putting together a post-season roster than winning games. They have the winning part down. The roster will be tough with so many young guys playing lights out baseball.
What is your opinion about NFL players and the National Anthem right now? How about the Steelers and their team wide actions? Former U.S. Army Ranger Alejandro Villanueva, who served in the Middle East, has repeatedly said he is “embarrassed” by being the only Steeler to be seen for the National Anthem. It will be interesting to see where all of this goes.
Local athletes are competing at a high level with some of our county high school soccer, golf, cross country, volleyball and football teams performing well as some of those sports head into tournament play this week. Our high school marching bands are also ready for competition and the opportunity to compete at the state level. Good luck to all of you!
Well, let’s go back to the fair. Specifically, French fries, hamburger, chopped sirloin burger, pizza, ice cream, caramel apple, beef and noodles, Italian sausage, pie, donuts, a corn dog or two or three, tater, pie, ice cream (did I write that already?), chicken and noodles, etc. etc. You know how it is. You gotta enjoy it while it’s here!
