Raymond S. Pew
COSHOCTON – Raymond Simon Pew, 97, life-long area farmer, died Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at his residence.
He was born Dec. 23, 1919 in Coshocton to the late Seldon and Lizzie (Hoffman) Pew.
Raymond was a member of the Keene United Methodist Church. He resided on the family farm where he had lived since he was 16 years old. He began his school career in 1926, as a young farm boy he attended the Miller one room school located in Keene Township. After setting for the Boxwell school exam he then began his high school career at Keene High School graduating in 1937. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in May of 1942 because his draft number was coming up. He served four years in the Army Signal Corps.
Over the years, Raymond has designed and built everything from grandfather clocks to working farm machinery, including a combination grain/cart feed mixer that was featured in Farm Journal Magazine. The grain/feed mixer is still in use today.
Raymond has been a Farm Bureau member since 1946. He belongs to the National Corn Growers Assn., and Corn Collectors of America Organization. He has also shared his time serving on the Keene School Board, The Three Rivers School Board, the Original Hospital Board Building Committee, Producers Livestock Committee, and the Coshocton Fleece and Lamb Committee. Raymond and Margaret Lou have also opened up their home to agricultural visitors from as far away as Kenya and Australia.
He entered an International Corn Growers Contest and won the championship trophy in Toronto, Canada in 1975, after having won the National Championship that year, beating out corn growers in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana.
Raymond is survived by his daughter, Phyllis (Lee) Debnar of Millersburg. Grandchildren, Larene (J) Hall & LaVonna (Greg) Gress. Great grandchildren, Brandan (Ashley) Smith, Brittleigh Smith (Mike Unger), Zanon Ray Hall, & Landan Gress. Great great grandchildren, Jace Allen & Lillian Smith. Sister-in-law, Gwen Snyder. Nephew, Melvin Pew. Niece, Lynn (Dave) Roenbaugh. Great nieces, Amanda (Tony) Meiser & Melissa (Dan) Winner. Great nephew, Mark Roenbaugh. Two wonderful, loving caregivers, Ronelle & Nancy and his nephew, Mark who have cared for him the last two years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Lou (Lawrence) Pew, whom he married August 1, 1943, she died October 24, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his son, Jay S. Pew, brother & sister-in-law, Chester & Onie Pew, and brother-in-law, Roy S. Snyder.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 9, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Keene United Methodist Church 27100 CR 1 in Keene with Pastor Dairel Kaiser officiating. Burial will follow in the South Lawn Cemetery at Coshocton with graveside military services conducted by the Coshocton County Joint Veterans Council. Visitation is Sunday, 4-7 p.m. at the church and also one hour prior to the service on Monday. The Fischer Funeral Home in Warsaw is handling the arrangements. ww.fischerfuneralhome.com
