It’s a wrap. The 166th annual Coshocton County Fair is in the books and all that is left are the memories of another great county fair and a few scraps of paper blowing across the fairgrounds. That might not even be happening due to the diligence of the folks that perform these tasks. I am sure that most of us – including me – take all that for granted. These folks deserve our thanks and appreciation so thank you!
Supporters turned out in strong fashion for the junior fair livestock auction on Thursday evening, Oct. 5. This event is always one of the highlights of the county fair and allows our youth to reap some of the rewards from their hard work and expenses of raising an animal. The Beacon will be publishing a special commemorative edition on Wednesday, Oct. 18 on the Sale of Champions with the buyers list.
The Major League Baseball Division Series is in full swing – pun intended with the Indians up one game on those pesky Yankees. It may all be over when you read this column with the next game on Monday night, Oct. 9. The Tribe is putting ace Bauer on the mound. Four games are on tap Monday with three of the teams in position to wrap it all up and head to the next round. The Dodgers are playing well while the Cubs and the Nationals may battle it to the fifth and deciding game.
Eight undefeated teams are ahead of the Buckeyes 5-1 record in the AP top 25 poll while the coaches poll have them at number eight ahead of Washington State. No surprises that Alabama and Clemson round out the top two. The game against Penn State now looms largest on the horizon for the Buckeyes on Oct. 28. Remember, the Buckeyes take on Nebraska this week with the 21st of October off. You can rake leaves, take a drive to see some fall foliage and enjoy the fall weather.
Actually, that Saturday works out ideally for Coshocton County folks with the Apple Butter Stirrin’, Fall Farm and Foliage Tour and several other events that are wrapped around that weekend. Let’s hope the weather is fall fantastic!
It seems quite the season for hurricanes as Hurricane Nate made landfall over the weekend and battered some of the Gulf coast before heading into the Appalachian region spreading rain throughout the area.
Speaking of rain, let’s be thankful that we received a nice amount over the weekend and late last week. We certainly needed it. Several folks said that the river is about the lowest that they have ever seen it. Agreed. It was dry.
Whoever is doing the work by the aqueduct bridge over the Walhonding River nice job. It looks like serious work indeed, putting in some additional beams to thwart logs and other large objects from battering into the bridge supports. Meanwhile, another group is giving the Lake Park Pavilion a nice facelift with some fresh paint. That is another nice improvement for our community. Thank you!
