Charles Edward Marlatt, Sr.
NEWCOMERSTOWN – Charles Edward Marlatt, Sr. (Charlie/ Eddie), Newcomerstown, passed away late Sunday morning, January 6, in Union Hospital, Dover.
Charles was born in Linton Township, Coshocton County, on March 14, 1924, a son of the late Denver and Ethel Marlatt. He was raised by his grandparents, David and Jenny Marlatt. After attending school in Plainfield he joined the Army. He was a Tec-5 specialist with the 1395th Engineering Construction Battalion as a telephone and telegraph line repairman. During World War II, Charles served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater with stops in Guadacanal, Tarawa, and Okinawa. He returned to civilian life in 1946 and began a long employment career. He retired in 1989 as a stationary engineer with General Tire Company, Newcomerstown, where he was employed for 13 years. Prior to this, he was employed at the former Heller Brothers Tool Company for many years, also as a stationary engineer. Before that, he worked at the former Pretty Products Company, Coshocton, and was employed with the railroads when he left the Army. He was a life member of both the Thomas Montgomery Post # 431, Newcomerstown American Legion and the Darrell Beiter Post # 3303, V. F. W., Newcomerstown. Charlie was also a model air plane enthusiast and belonged to the Coshocton County Cloud Climbers. He also enjoyed reading the Bible, creating home video tapes, reading and watching all things related to the railroads, and doing electrical work and rewiring houses. He also enjoyed traveling and visiting many lighthouses on the coast and on lakes.
In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by a sister, June Grindstaff, Newcomerstown.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 24 years, D. Jean Johnson Sweitzer Marlatt, Newcomerstown, whom he married on July 20, 1988. Also surviving are two sons, J. D. and wife Shannon Marlatt and J. R. Marlatt, all of Newcomerstown. He also leaves to cherish his memory many members of Jean Sweitzer’s family, brother Robert Marlatt, Newcomerstown, a sister and her husband, Sarah and Donald Schworm, St. Clairsville, sisters Blanche of Missouri, Evelyn of Medina, Jean of Coshocton, Helen Wilson, Shirley, and the mother of his two sons, Barbara Loretta Marlatt, Newcomerstown.
To honor his wishes, his family is requesting that his remains be cremated. No visiting hours or funeral services are to be held at this time. Grave side services, military grave side services, and the burial of his ashes will be held later this year at Earley’s Cemetery, Wheeling Township, Guernsey County. These arrangements will be announced at that time by the Ourant Funeral Home, who is assisting the family with all the arrangements. The family is requesting that memorials be made in Charlie’s name to an individual’s favorite charity.
