CHS students presenting ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’

COSHOCTON – Martha and Abby Brewster really believe they are taking away the troubles of lonely old men by advertising rooms to rent, poising the elderly men who come and then burying them in their basement. Once their nephew, Mortimer Brewster, discovers what they are doing, he desperately tries to get them to understand that it’s wrong.

The Brewster trio set the storyline for “Arsenic and Old Lace,” a comedy being presented by Coshocton High School Theatre Club students.

“They (Martha and Abby) really, really believe what they are doing is ok,” said director Kris Hardesty. “They even call it their charity and tell him they don’t criticize what he does so they should criticize them.”

The plot, however, gets even more interesting when Mortimer’s long-lost brother, who truly is a sociopathic murderer, shows up.

“It’s a classic comedy that was written in 1939 and the humor in it is dated, but the kids are embracing it and get it,” Hardesty said. “They’ve really gotten into their characters and the culture of 1939. It’s quite amazing.”

“Arsenic and Old Lace” will be performed by the cast of 9-12 graders at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16 and 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 and Saturday, Nov. 18, in McKinley Auditorium at Coshocton High School. Tickets are available at the door and are $5 for adults and $3 for students. Doors open one hour prior to curtain time.

The cast of the play includes: Christa Lain, Bladen Johnson, Graham Beaumont, Jenna Stonebraker, Kenzie Potter, Wesley Abbott, Halley Jones, Amanda Kittel, Cole Fisher, Lydia Bailey, Max Kuntscher, Tyler Huston, Evelyn Hire, Sarah Heading, Rachel Roman, and Spencer Wolfe.
