Helmick sisters honored at Warsaw Lions Minstrel Show
WARSAW – The 60th annual Warsaw Lions Minstrel Show had the theme of “Anything Goes” and the show certainly lived up to its billing with multiple one liners by the End Men, terrific vocal performances and various skits that kept the audience laughing. The show is held each year in November the weekend before Thanksgiving at River View High School with Director Jean Haumschild and Interlocutor Jim Bartlett filling their usual role for the show. The dates for the 2018 show will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 16-18.
Each year the Warsaw Lions Club bestows the honor of joining the Minstrel Show Hall of Fame to a worthy individual or individuals. This year the club awarded the three Helmick sisters: Doris Granger, Charlotte Thompson and Janet Myers. Granger commented to a member of the club and said, “When I was a poor little girl growing up I needed glasses. My mom contacted Bob Chase and they (the Warsaw Lions Club) bought them for us. I am very thankful and feel good in my heart to contribute my time for six weeks out of the year for this club that gives back to so many all year.”
The hours and hours of preparation, research and practice all come together for two evening shows and a Sunday afternoon show during this weekend that truly showcases local talent. There are no bad performances – each person gives their best and it really shows. The Warsaw Lions Club had another hit with the Diamond Anniversary “Anything Goes” Minstrel Show.
It is difficult to find the version of slapstick comedy and musical talent that is demonstrated at this show. The members of the Warsaw Lions Club and all of the accompanying participants deserve a big thanks and appreciation for their sacrifice of time, showcase of talent and the energy that they devote to provide each audience with a huge dose of laughter.
It is well worth the $10 ticket price alone to hear Larry Pepper wrap up the evening with his solemn and well delivered thoughts on the wisdom gained and shared from life.
The monies raised from this one weekend each year go far in helping the Warsaw Lions Club donate to many worthy and local causes. The current club President is Alyssa Mullet and you can follow the club on Facebook.
Thank you Warsaw Lions and all those that make this show a reality for the community.
