Garden club to hold second lecture in series

| February 5, 2018

COSHOCTON – The second lecture in the Town and Country Garden Club’s Garden Lecture Series will be Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Frontier Power Meeting Room, 770 S. Second St. The presenter will be Mark Miller, outreach education manager at the Franklin Park Conservatory.

Last month, the club held its first Garden Lecture Series and featured Mary Lewis from the Ohio Heritage Garden at the governor’s mansion.

“I think the garden at the governor’s mansion is one of the state’s best-kept secrets, not only for looking at all the plants and flowers, but they have a lot of educational opportunities there for kids,” said Karen Andrews, president of Town and Garden Country Club. “They have taken plants from every climate in the state and incorporated them into this garden.”

This month’s lecture is entitled, “Right Plant, Right Place”.

“It’s about picking the right plant for your garden as far as lighting, and he’ll touch a little on pruning,” said Andrews.

The lectures are open to the public and Andrews hopes that all gardeners in the community will come.

“There are some beautiful gardens in the community,” said Andrews. “We want these folks to come out and learn from the speakers and maybe get some new ideas for their gardens.”

Cost to attend is $5 per person for each presentation. Light refreshments will be served and reservations are requested but not required. Call Ed Kiefer at Kiefer’s Florist, 740-622-3993, for reservations.

“Most people, when they think of the garden club, they think of the floral designs at the fair,” said Andrews. “We are actually more garden-focused within the club and we share a lot of information and ideas. We hope to get these professionals to come into the community and not just share with the garden club members, but with the community. It’s a good group. We enjoy having fun together and learning together.”

Thursday, March 8 will be the last lecture in the series. Mike Ecker from Dawes Arboretum will speak on best shrubs for the Midwest.

“We would love to have everyone,” said Andrews. “We are looking forward to meeting our gardening friends in the community.”
