Our community came out in a big way last Thursday morning at Coshocton Village Inn & Suites to wrap up the current United Way campaign, recognize top givers, partner agency representatives and many others that help make this program a key driver for programs that help youth and adults in Coshocton County. There is probably not one person in our community that has not been touched in one way or another by this agency and the many programs that they support. Congratulations are in order for the folks at AK Steel for once again being the top giver. You can still contribute to the current campaign and help push the United Way over the goal!

The Coshocton Rotary Club is celebrating 100 years of serving our community this year. Most people know about the very popular “Twelve Days of Christmas” program yet the local Rotary Club goes much further and deeper than that. An upcoming issue of The Beacon will focus on the local club and their contributions to Coshocton County over the years.

Does the arrival of bluebirds signify an early spring? Regardless of whether that rodent groundhog saw its shadow or not I tend to think that a bluebird working on its nest can only mean one thing – and that is an early spring!

The United States sent over 200 athletes to the winter Olympics in South Korea and currently stands in sixth place overall in the medal count. The Norwegians, always a favorite at the winter games – are first with 28 total medals. The athletes from America sported fancy jackets, apparel and oh, those gloves. Those are cool. But all of the millions of dollars spent on facilities, sponsorships and training has not yet come to fruition in South Korea. However, as they say, it’s not over until it’s over.

Speaking of that, young Austin Dillon came through at the end of the Daytona 500 following a late race caution flag that took out several of the leaders and potential race winners that included Ryan Blaney. Blaney ran an almost flawless race and led a lot of the laps in the inaugural race of the 2018 season until the multiple car wreck. Danica Patrick moved the needle way forward for women in racing.

Team LeBron outlasted Team Steph in the NBA All Star contest with the former coming out three points on top 148 to 145 and LeBron picked up another MVP award.

Our nation is in mourning with the tragedies in Westerville and Parkland, Florida. Two veteran police officers in Westerville and 17 people killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida have people’s emotions raw. Our youth should not have to go to school wondering if this is the last time that they will walk the hallways. The students have called for mass protests and a march on Washington D. C. in March to bring attention to current gun laws and possible reform. The students from Parkland will also be going to Tallahassee to meet with their state legislators about the same issues. They want to be heard and deserve to be heard. The politicians will need to do more than just listen.
