COSHOCTON – A new athletic opportunity is being created for Coshocton City Schools sixth through eighth graders.

The Coshocton Middle School Swim team will practice from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Coshocton High School. Meets will be held at the Muskingum Recreation Center (MRC) in Zanesville, with the first one scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, March 9.

“Tri-Valley’s coach put this together because she saw a need,” said Cari Weaver. “We are hoping it will be a way to start getting kids into the sport. The last two years at Coshocton have been about rebuilding.”

Weaver is the head swimming coach at CHS and she will lead the middle school team along with her assistant coach Michael McKee. Right now they have 10 girls and one boy on their team.

“Most of them have done Rising Tide before and they are all able to do the strokes,” Weaver said. “We are just helping them become more proficient and building their endurance.”

The team members are asked to compete in at least two meets and Weaver said they can do three individual events and two relays.

Participants however, have to pay $50 up front to the CHS Swim Boosters to cover a lifeguard, MRC meet fees and a team shirt. They also must provide their own transportation and black swim suit for meets, if possible.

New swimmers are still welcome and can direct questions to Weaver at cari.weaver@omeresa.net or call 740-622-5514 ext. 3260. Participants must be able to swim the length of the pool, which is 25 meters.

“Come check out a practice or feel free to contact me,” Weaver said to any potential new swimmers. “If you know someone on the team come along with them to a practice. We want to show kids what it’s like to be on a swim team, help them gain skills and prepare them for high school swimming.”
