Presbyterians share Lenten cantata
COSHOCTON – The Presbyterian Church, North Fourth and Chestnut Streets in Coshocton, will present David H. Williams’ sacred cantata, “On the Passion of Christ” as part of 10:30 a.m. worship on Sunday, March 11. It’s the Sunday of the time change; remember to turn your clocks forward an hour on Saturday evening.
The church’s Chancel Choir, conducted by Charles R. Snyder and accompanied by organist Mark D. Wagner, will be joined by soloists Debra L. Clark, soprano; Matthew P. Downing, tenor; Gordon A. Kendall, baritone; and a string quartet: Susan Larson and Diane VanCamp, violin; Victoria Capper, viola; and Dan Clark, cello.
For more than 60 years, the music of David H. Williams has been appreciated by school and church choirs in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Williams was born in Wales in 1919 and immigrated to the United States in 1927. He studied music in New York City and then continued to live and work there. He moved to Tucson in 1963 where he served at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and later at Catalina United Methodist Church. One of his Tucson colleagues called Williams “a fabulous musician who knew the human voice and what voices could do in terms of heights and depths.” He died in November 2002.
The Reverend Jonathan T. Carlisle and Jim Arganbright will serve as liturgists. The Crusaders Choir, accompanied by Ann A. Leppla, will also sing, and Mason Gano will be the cantor.
Pastor Carlisle will lead an adult study and discussion on the cantata text at 9:15 a.m. Williams wove the cantata story from scripture and the hymns and poems of Benjamin Heber, Johann Cruger, Philipp Nicolai, Katharina von Schlegel, and Christina Rossetti. The class will meet in the third floor Conference Room, and visitors are welcome.
All are invited to share in this musical worship service for Lent. Preschool childcare will be provided, and ample parking is available.
