Explore, learn, grow workshop kicks off 4-H week

COSHOCTON – 4-H week is March 4-10 and an explore, learn and grow workshop was held at Grace Methodist Church on Saturday, March 3 to help kick off the week of special activities, including a poster and photo contest and local businesses allowing clubs to decorate their windows.
D Woodward Wells is one of the special interest representatives in Coshocton County and she organized the event. “I was contacted by someone who wanted to teach a workshop,” said Wells. She found several adults who were willing to share their knowledge and time to help 4-H youth learn about new opportunities for their projects.
Wells said about 25 youth had signed up for the morning of workshops and the day was planned to inform, educate and have fun with friends. Workshops included bees, sewing, mini-gardens, woodworking, livestock project books and a skillathon. There were also displays for shooting sports and hunting/wildlife.
Vearl Specht is the shotgun instructor. He said any youth that is 12 years or older and that can safely hold the shotgun is eligible to participate in his classes. “Safety is always our first priority,” said Specht. If a youth is interested in the shotgun class, they should contact the extension office to sign up, as classes will be beginning soon.
The hunting/wildlife instructor is Joel Hamric. “We do mapping and learning to use a compass, in addition to being safe in the woods and gun safety. I also teach about wildlife in our area,” he said. These classes will be starting soon, too, and can be registered for by calling the extension office.
Participants in the sewing workshop made tissue pouches and bean bags. They were shown how to safely use a sewing machine and other techniques for simple sewing projects. Those who joined in the woodworking sessions were shown a variety of tools and could talk to one of the local judges about their projects. Ryan Greten is building a gun cabinet for his project and was one of the participants in the class. He is a member of This-N-That 4-H Club.
On Tuesday, March 13, the OSU Extension Office will be hosting a party to celebrate A.B. Graham’s 150th birthday. Graham started 4-H. The party will be at the extension office from 4 to 5 p.m.
