There was quite a difference in the state of the union addresses from the U.S. and Russia to say the least. Russia talks about submarines (or some kind of far-fetched underwater submersible launching platform) that can launch top secret weapons (made by ACME no doubt!) while the U.S. talks about the triumph of the human spirit. Perhaps there is a reason beyond the pale why America remains the nation that dreamers the world over still want to live, work and raise their families in. And despite the talking heads and media that would have us split down the middle on many issues of the day, these people, and the many generations before them, push those distractions aside, get up and go to work, and do their best to live out the American dream.
Local high school wrestlers made a nice showing at the district tournament with seven headed to the OHSAA state wrestling tournament in Columbus this weekend. Headed to Columbus from Newcomerstown, Gavin Weaver, first, Logan Hursey, third and Coltin Meek, third. From Coshocton, Lucian Brink, first, Blake Barrick, second, and Austin Guthrie, fourth. From River View, Sam Mitchell is headed to state with second place at district, Dalton Cunningham placed fifth and is a first alternate for state and Rann Zimmer placed sixth. Good luck to all wrestlers headed to state and to all coaches, stats, fans and parents for a great season.
Spring arrives on Tuesday, March 20 this year. That is only 15 days away as I write this column. Think about it. In just a blade of grass over two weeks, that wonderful season that brings baseball, golf, flowers and plants to life, green grass, dandelions and trees bedecked with fresh leaves, pops onto the scene. Of course, it also brings insects, mowing and things that are not so pleasant. Yep, I know there is a whole bunch of folks that love to get behind, or on, that mower and chop up some grass. I am actually not real sure how we left the saga of the riding mower last year. It is covered with a snow shovel, tarp, various automotive parts, a weed-eater and who knows what else from relocating this and that in the garage over the winter. The saga will continue.
Congrats to the Ashland Lady Eagles for winning their third consecutive GLIAC league and tournament title and the Lady Eagles will host their third consecutive home NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament starting Friday. The number one ranked Lady Eagles open tourney play on Friday, March 9 against number eight seed Hillsdale. The Lady Eagles currently have a 68 game win streak, the longest in the nation. At the 90th Academy Awards, commonly referred to as “The Oscars”, Gary Oldman walked away with the Actor in a Leading Role Oscar for his outstanding and superb portrayal of Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour” which is a movie well worth your time. I have not seen “The Shape of Water” (Best Picture) or Frances McDormand in “Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri (Actress in a Leading Role).
