Public invited to Star Party at CHS
COSHOCTON – Coshocton High School’s Astro Club is excited to bring back its Star Party.
The second annual event is open to the public and will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 20 on the fourth floor of the high school.
“For a first time event it went really well last year,” said Jason Kodysz, advisor of the club and a science teacher at CHS. “The kids enjoyed doing it and were interested in bringing it back.”
Club members have been working really hard at organizing activities for the event.
“They are trying to make things even better than last year,” Kodysz said. “With our moon rock hunt instead of just using plastic eggs one of the students thought about making cement eggs that you can crack open with a hammer to see what’s inside.”
The group also is trying to incorporate some activities they enjoy doing at meetings.
“One of the activities they love to do is when I put up 16 names or so of different types of people and they have to pick 10 to start a new civilization,” Kodysz said. “They all come with a twist though. The whole group has to agree on whom they pick and if one person disagrees they have to keep discussing.”
There will be access to the school’s new planetarium with shows being held at 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 8 p.m. on a first come, first served bases. Signup sheets will be put out for each time.
Attendees will have the chance to view stars through the school’s telescope, get their face painted and play a variety of games created by the club members. Refreshments will be served.
Club fundraisers and generous donations from the community help make this event possible. The group’s next fundraiser is actually the week before the Star Party. At 6 p.m. on Friday, April 13 they invite the public to come to the school’s auditorium for a theater night. For $5 people will get to enjoy the latest Thor movie, popcorn, candy and water.
“My project for our events is a green screen for people to get their pictures taken with,” Kodysz said. “I’m trying to find a Thor related picture to use for the movie night and something bigger like maybe a photo of Mars for the Star Party.”
An auction of donated items will be set up at the movie night and the Star Party.
“I think 20 different businesses or so have donated,” Kodysz said. “Some donated money, some helped with specific things and some donated items. Those donated items will be up for auction. People can buy tickets for a $1 and put them toward what they hope to win. It’s a wide variety of items too. We have things as small as hats and bird seed to an AAA membership.”
