Gunn signs with Wheeling Jesuit

WARSAW – River View High School senior Grant Gunn has wanted to be a college athlete ever since elementary school. On April 13 his dream came true when he signed his letter of intent to run track at Wheeling Jesuit University.

“When I visited I felt right at home,” Gunn said.

He plans to major in business management and run the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

“They (Wheeling Jesuit) are upgrading everything in their athletic department as of this summer and are signing some really good athletes,” Gunn said. “They also will have a football team for the first time, which will be exciting to watch.”

He added that it took a lot of hard work and determination for him to get to this point. Gunn’s advice to his younger teammates with the same goal would be to keep working and don’t be satisfied.

“Wheeling Jesuit is getting an awesome athlete,” said Mike Gray, head boys track coach at River View. “He works really hard and makes sure he gets in the weight room.”

He added that it will be hard to replace Gunn next year.

“He’s the fastest guy on the team, but he’s also not just a good athlete, he’s a good human being” Gray said. “He cares about other people.”

Grant is the son of Jeff Gunn and Nicole and Ezra Helmick.

“I liked Wheeling Jesuit the first time he talked to the coach and the campus felt homey,” Nicole said.

She graduated from River View in 1991 and has enjoyed watching Grant compete in the same track events she did.

“I was a sprinter and held the record in the 100 meter dash and Grant is trying to go for his own record,” Nicole said.

Jeff added that he’s very proud of Grant and has enjoyed watching him grow over the years.

“This is an exciting day,” Jeff said. “I’m definitely proud of him. He’s progressed as a runner and grown as an adult.”
