Senior Center celebrates moms

COSHOCTON – One of the hardest jobs in the world is being a mom and the Coshocton Senior Center decided to celebrate all senior citizen mothers on Friday, May 11 with a special day.
“We wanted to do a spa day,” said Laura McCloy, office technician at the senior center. “It’s a nice refreshing day for all of our mothers.”
The day included paraffin wax hand dips and manicures with cosmetology students from the Coshocton County Career Center, and chair massages.
“All the people here are volunteering their time,” said McCloy. “We are so fortunate that we could do so much for the seniors.”
About 80 women registered to participate in the special Mother’s Day event.
“It’s way bigger than any Mother’s Day celebration we’ve had here before,” said McCloy. “This is my first year I’ve planned this event and the first big event I’ve scheduled on my own. I’m thrilled with the response and the turn out. We try to do something new every year and give our senior citizens something that they might not normally have.”
Each of the women started with the paraffin wax hand dips, then moved on to manicures, and ended the day with a chair massage.
Patty Payne of Canton was at the paraffin wax station with her mother, Betty Guilliams.
“I came to be with my mom for Mother’s Day,” said Payne. “It’s a day to pamper mom. We’re going to be doing other things today that she wants to do. She’ll be 90 soon and the senior center is just wonderful for her.”
Diane Hutchison was also getting a paraffin wax hand treatment from Megan Stonebraker who has contributed more than 120 hours volunteering with the career center.
“I started out doing this as requirements for clubs,” said Stonebraker. “Once I started doing it and interacting with the community, it was something that I could do for Coshocton. It’s nice to meet all the wonderful people here at the senior center.”
At the next station getting her nails done was Liz Kurtz, who is no stranger to the students at the career center.
“I go to the career center anyways and all these people I know from the career center, so it’s a very special day,” said Kurtz. “Alesa is my senior stylist and Tyler is my junior stylist. I go there all the time for about the last 12 to 15 years.”
Kurtz said she has one daughter.
Darla Wagner is the cosmetology instructor at the career center and was on-hand to oversee the students who volunteered.
“We like to stay involved in the community and Laura called me and asked if we could come out for a special day,” said Wagner. “We just like to give back to the community with time and with services.”
The last station featured free chair massages from Kristin Cheney and Sherry MeLick.
“I do terra massages here at the senior center every Thursday and I’ve gotten to know these women,” said Cheney. “These women are so deserving because they give and give. It’s a pleasure to be here with these ladies.”
Cheney said that when she asked MeLick to volunteer with her, she jumped on board.
“It just seemed like a great thing to do,” said MeLick. “To come down here and do something for the community.”
