Earl Raymond Etter
Earl Raymond Etter, 78, West Lafayette, passed away on Wednesday evening, January 30, in the Country Lawn Nursing Home, Navarre.
Earl was born in Newcomerstown on April 17, 1934, a son of the late Charles W. Etter, who died in 1991, and the late Helen M. Shryock Etter, who died in 2002.
He was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School, class of 1953. Earl then enlisted in the National Guard in 1953 and was then transferred to the Army, serving with the 30th Field Artillery Battalion at Fort Lewis, Washington. He returned to civilian life in 1958 and began working with the railroad, where he served as a railroad conductor for 36 years before his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Thomas Montgomery Post # 431, Newcomerstown American Legion and also was a member of the Newcomerstown Veterans’ Honor Guard for many years. Earl was a member of the Isleta Church of Christ, the Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau, and was a life member of the B. P. O. E. # 1555, Newcomerstown Elks Lodge, where he served as past exalted ruler, district deputy, and as a member of the past district director advisory board.
Earl was also a member of the Newcomerstown Lone Star Masonic Lodge # 175, F & A M. He began his Masonic career with the Cyprus Lodge, Strasburg, where he was a past master, and also belonged to the Scottish Rite Valley of Canton. Earl was active with the C C & S Railway Club and belonged to the National Association of Retired Veteran Railway Employees (N.A.R.V.R.E.). He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, riding motorcycles, collecting and hunting arrowheads, and spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his brother, Reuben M. Etter, Newcomerstown, who died earlier this year, and two brothers-in-law, Dan E. Kurtz, New Philadelphia, and L. Thomas Hart, Newcomerstown.
Earl is survived by his wife, Sandra J. “Sandy” Treasure Etter, West Lafayette, whom he married on September 14, 1956. Also surviving are a daughter and two sons: Lisa K. & husband Dr. David M. Booth, Newcomerstown, Brian K. and wife Jody L. Etter, Pataskala, and Scott A. and wife Lori A. Etter, Chambersburg, PA. Earl also leaves four grandchildren: Lindsay K. & husband Dr. Richard Limperos, Medina, Derek M. Booth, a student at the Ohio State University, Adam C. & wife Sheea Etter, Chambersburg, PA, and Tyler R. Etter, a student at Kent State University. There are also two sisters, Dodie F. Kurtz, Dover, and Evelyn I. Hart, Newcomerstown, a sister-in-law, Dorretta Etter, Newcomerstown, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services to celebrate Earl’s life will be held on Monday afternoon, February 4, 1:00 PM, in the Ourant Funeral Home. Evangelist Charles E. Grubbs, Jr. will conduct the services. Burial will follow at the Waggoner Cemetery, Oxford Township, Coshocton County, where the Newcomerstown Veterans’ Honor Guard will conduct grave side services. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday evening, 4 until 7 PM, in the funeral home, and on Monday from Noon until the 1:00 PM funeral. Masonic services will be held on Sunday afternoon, 3:45 PM, in the funeral home.
The family is requesting that memorials be made in Earl’s name to an individual’s favorite charity.
