RVHS softball celebrates successful softball season
WARSAW – River View’s softball season might not have ended how the team wanted it to, but it was still a magical ride.
The team’s regular season record was 24-3 and its overall record was 28-4 after falling 7-3 to Granville in the regional semifinals. They also won the ECOL and were sectional and district champions.
“We had mostly juniors, a senior and a couple of freshmen and their work ethic was unrivaled,” said Head Coach Bonnie Infante. “They always wanted more whether it was an extra half hour or more swings. They wanted to do well and that was on the field and in the classroom. They all had above a 3.0 and most of them were above a 3.5.”
A big part of their success this season also came from team spirit.
“They accepted their roles and wanted to do what they could for River View,” Infante said. “They picked each other up and didn’t want to let each other down. Even in our last game they never gave up. We were down 7-0, but they refused to be shutout and we picked up runs late in the game.”
She and her husband, Willie who is an assistant coach, agreed that their last three tournament games were very memorable.
“They never gave up,” he said. “They just kept fighting.”
Six members of the team are playing travel ball this summer and others will be involved in a Wednesday night league to continue to sharpen their skills.
“Even if we would have made it to state there is always something you can improve on,” Bonnie said. “You can work on your mental edge or the little things.”
Bonnie is very proud of all 13 members of the team.
“All 13 of them stepped up this year and it was awesome to see,” she said. “If you needed a clutch up, whoever was up did what they could and the same thing happened if you needed a big play in the field. They literally refused to let each other down.”
