Bicycle Safety Helmet Program offered this summer

COSHOCTON – Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home has teamed up with the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office and Earl’s Dari to offer a unique and fun Bicycle Safety Helmet Program for all of Coshocton County youths.
The helmet program involves officers “pulling over” children who are wearing helmets while riding their bicycles and giving them “tickets”. These special tickets can be taken to Earl’s Dari and can be exchanged for a free kid’s ice cream cone or kid’s slushy.
Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home hopes to increase awareness among children about the benefits of taking precautions to protect their heads by offering a positive incentive for doing so. During the summer, many children take to their bicycles as a way of getting around and wearing helmets could help save their lives in the event of an accident. According to helmets.org, “more than 40 percent of all bicycle-related deaths are due to head injuries and approximately three-fourths of all bicycle-related head injuries occur among children ages 14 and under. It is estimated that 75 percent of bicycle-related fatalities among children could be prevented with a helmet.”
“Children are more likely to wear a helmet if riding with others (peers or adults) who are also wearing one,” said Jessica Paisley, General Manager of Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home. “Riding a bicycle is a wonderful way for children to be physically active, but the road is a dangerous place and safety precautions are very important. I hope that all the kids in Coshocton County get pulled over this summer! And I hope that parents teach their children that not only is wearing a helmet added safety for themselves but it’s also pretty cool to be pulled over by the sheriff’s office and given a ticket for free ice cream, just for doing the right thing.”
