We’re one week away from Independence Day – July 4th. America will be celebrating 242 years of independence this year. I would imagine that plans are in place for a grand 250 year celebration party in 2026. Yet, the Revolutionary War did not end until 1783 and began in 1775. As true historians know, the outcome was never quite certain until Yorktown.
We celebrate by getting together for picnics, barbecues, swimming, parades, festivities, displaying the flag and of course, fireworks. As many of you already know, the fireworks are returning to the Coshocton County Fairgrounds and can be seen on Tuesday evening, July 3 with a rain date of July 4. Be sure to see the article and the advertisement in the special “Celebrate Coshocton County” section inside this week’s Beacon that gives more details. Basically, the gates open at 4 p.m. and all you need to gain entry to the fairgrounds is a donation that will go towards the 2019 fireworks show.
Many local businesses and organizations contributed to make this year’s fireworks show a superb one and in particular, the ground display is not to be missed and – important here – it can only be seen from inside the fairgrounds! Make your plans now to grab some chairs, a blanket and the kiddies and make it an evening of fun.
Coshocton County has much to offer. You could spend a week or two of vacation right in your own backyard, save a lot of money while doing so – and get to know Coshocton County from a totally different perspective.
The “Celebrate Coshocton County” special section inside this week’s issue is chock full of events, information, things to do and places to go within the borders of our county. And it is not a comprehensive list by any means. You more than likely know of more things to do and other places to go that you have discovered over the years. Maybe it’s a favorite place to walk, ride a bike or grab an ice cream. Suggestion here – if biking – stop and eat the ice cream then back on the bike. Yes, this is the voice of experience from when I was a youngster. A couple of times running into the back of a parked car while cruising down the street does increase the caution meter. For a period of time.
One of the coolest gifts I have received in a long time arrived last week as a combo Father’s Day and birthday gift. Mark is back into vinyl. Yes, the record player is now throwing out the snaps, pops and crackle of my old collection of 45’s. Way cool! The funniest part was our grand-daughter blurting out, “Papa, what’s a record?” Well, of course we had to show her. I’m still searching the nooks and crannies of the house for my favorites. A few will need replaced as they are cracked, chipped or otherwise damaged. Personally I’m glad that vinyl is making a comeback.
