William J. “Bill” Bodenheimer

TitleWilliam J. “Bill” Bodenheimer, 92, a resident of the RiversideManorNursing & RehabilitationCenter for many years, formerly of West Church St., Newcomerstown, passed away on Sunday morning, February 3, in the CoshoctonCountyMemorialHospital.

Bill was born in Newcomerstown on May 21, 1920, and was preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. Bodenheimer, who died in 1974, and Lydia E. Regula Bodenheimer, who died in 1986.

Following his school studies at NewcomerstownHigh School, Bill enlisted in the Navy and served in the south Pacific during World War II. When he returned to civilian life, Bill was employed at the former Alsco Company, Gnadenhutten, where he worked for over 30 years before his retirement in 1983. Bill and his wife were active members of the First Baptist Church, Port Washington, for many years. He was also a member of the Newcomerstown Senior Citizens and served on the Newcomerstown Veterans’ Honor Guard for many years.

Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing, and taking camping trips with his wife to Canada, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. He also had a strong belief in the flag of the United States and his right to fight for and protect the flag.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, V. Mae Huntsman Bodenheimer, Newcomerstown, who died on May 4, 2010, and whom he married June 27, 1953. Also deceased are a grandson, Gary Sargent, Pine Knot, Kentucky, and two nieces, Connie J. McCune and Diannia L. McCune, both of Newcomerstown. Bill was also the last member of his generation of the Bodenheimer family, as he was preceded in death by brother Floyd E. and wife Charlotte M. Bodenheimer, Newcomerstown, and sisters Helen F. and husband Samuel G. McCune, Newcomerstown, and Violet F. and husband Hank Sorg, Hollendale, Florida.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Nancy L. Jessee, Cincinnati. He also leaves five grandchildren: Candy Sargent, Las Vegas, Nevada, Alice and husband Inis Broach, Penny Sargent, and Emily Sargent, all of Cincinnati, and Preston Sargent, Pine Knot, Kentucky. There are also 10 great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, including his niece and caregiver, Bonnie J. McCune, Newcomerstown.

To honor Bill’s wishes, no public visiting hours will be observed. Public grave side services and burial will be held on Saturday morning, February 9, at West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown. Rev. Paul Schwab will officiate and the Newcomerstown Veterans’ Honor Guard will also provide military grave side services. Memorials may be made in Bill’s name to an individual’s favorite charity.
