Coshocton County Board of DD holds first July 4th celebration

COSHOCTON – About 75 people enjoyed a Fourth of July Celebration held at Hopewell School on Wednesday, July 11.
The event was sponsored by the Coshocton County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Toby Collins, director of recreation and Special Olympics for CCBDD, said, “It’s a way to get everyone together. They all like the games and food and to hang out with their friends.”
Younger children enjoyed the playground, while others played basketball, corn hole, baseball, or volleyball. Parents of Special Olympic athletes helped prepare the cookout supper for the crowd. “I just want to thank all the parents and coaches who helped cook, serve the food and set-up for tonight,” said Collins. “I couldn’t do this without all of their help.”
“I think the word is getting out about our county board and Special Olympics. We are reaching more people. There are people here tonight that I don’t recognize and that’s great. Facebook is helping spread the word. Special Olympics begins at 8 years old and more younger ones are playing,” said Collins.
She also said that events like this bring out the best in everyone. “The older ones will help the younger or the other way around.” Evidence of this was adults playing basketball and patiently showing children how to shoot the ball or a group playing wiffle ball in which both sides cheered for the young girl who hit the ball after missing several times.
