Art contest and display celebrates history of Roscoe Village

COSHOCTON – The Canal Era Art Contest was about more than just picking a winning piece. It also was an opportunity for Roscoe Village to showcase how art has always played a role in its history.
The contest pieces, along with several items that belong to the village, were on display as part of the annual member and volunteer appreciation day, which was held July 21.
One area included pottery pieces created to resemble one on display at the village’s doctor’s house, table runners made by historical interpreters and gourds that were turned into useful items. There also were bricks, a brick mold, pieces made by the blacksmith, and quilted items showcased.
“We’ve always had talented people here,” said Lynda Daniel, marketing manager at Roscoe Village. “What they do has just evolved. Art isn’t just about painting. It’s also craftsmanship.”
Diana Swigert, who retired from village and now volunteers, also found framed art pieces in Roscoe’s collection that she added to the display.
“Next year is our 50th anniversary so we want to show even more art from the village,” Swigert said. “Roscoe Village started with art. Mr. Montgomery saw the mural showing how Roscoe used to look and wanted to do something to save it. Art is a part of our life here.”
Members, volunteers and guests who attended the appreciation day voted and selected Shara Prindle as the winner of the Canal Era Art Contest.
