West Lafayette Homecoming Royalty chosen
WEST LAFAYETTE – Burt Park was crowded as friends and family gathered to watch the new West Lafayette Homecoming Court be chosen. Alison Norman welcomed everyone and was also the emcee for the evening.
Norman shared that the homecoming court has a Facebook page and that people could follow their activities, such as other festivals they attend and the places they volunteer. Part of the Facebook page was the Cutie Patootie contest. Parents could submit a photo of their toddler and the one with the most likes was chosen the Cutie Patootie for 2018. Scarlett Grant was the winner.
Leigha Grace Hollins, daughter of Ashley and Jason Hollins, was named Little Miss and Will Klier, son of Ashley and Joe Klier was named Little Mister. Hollins likes playing with her dolls, dogs and brother, while Klier likes trains, tractors and dinosaur cereal.
The Junior Miss contestants were each asked a few questions, based on what they are involved in. After the interviews, each could choose a wrapped flower. The little girl who got the red rose was named Junior Miss and the one who found the pink rose was named First Attendant. Kylee Mullins, daughter of Amanda and Matthew Mullins, was named Junior Miss with Madelyn Klier, daughter of Ashley and Joe Klier, named First Attendant.
The Senior Queen is a woman who gives above and beyond to help West Lafayette and her friends. This year, Vicki Davis was named Senior Queen. Through her tears, she said, “This is an absolute, total surprise. I don’t know what to say. Thank you and good luck to all the girls.” Her family was on hand to place her crown on her head and the crowd cheered at her surprise.
Three young ladies vied for the title of Mini Queen. After short interviews about their activities, Alaena Huff, daughter of Michelle and Ed Huff, was chosen the 2018 Mini Queen. Her First Attendant is Madeleine Larrison, daughter of Shelly and Tim Larrison and Second Attendant is Lorryn Wentz, daughter of Candy and Jeremy Lynch and Scott Wentz.
There were also three candidates for the title of Junior Queen. They were interviewed about their activities and also chose a secret question they had to answer. Jordyne Carpenter’s question was “What qualities make a good friend?” She answered a good friend has to be kind and ask if they need anything when they spend the night and they have to be nice. Destinee Christina was asked what she liked best about herself. “My eyes, because they are blue,” she answered. What the most important thing she wanted to accomplish in her life was the question Amiyah Barthalow had to answer. “Helping others and being kind.”
After much debate, it was announced that Carpenter, daughter of Kimberly McDonald and Kyle Carpenter, was the 2018 Junior Queen. Her First Attendant is Christina, daughter of Amanda and Matthew Mullins, and Second Attendant is Barthalow, daughter of Betina Scott.
Kierra Barthalow, Aliyah Guthrie and Jadn Lindig competed for the title of Homecoming Queen. Some of Barthalow’s activities include deer hunting with her brother and her dad, wrestling (she is the only girl on Ridgewood High School’s wrestling team), playing the trombone and being in the drama club. Her secret question was to name someone from history she would like to meet. She said she would like to meet Martin Luther King, Jr, for all the good he had done.
Lindig’s activities include shot put and discus for the RHS track team, girl scouts, and student council. She said her favorite activity for scouts was when they made ornaments for the people in the care center. Her question was “If there were no rules in life for one day, what would you do?” She laughed and answered she was take her dad’s motorcycle to LA because she loves music and stars and she would be wild.
Guthrie is involved in drama club, 4-H, FFA and is taking college classes. She was involved in the high school’s musical last spring and will be taking Market Rabbits to the fair this year. Her question was “If you could be the spokesperson for any product, what would it be?” She said she would choose salt water batteries because they are cheap and could bring energy to poor countries.
It took the three judges several minutes to choose Lindig as the 2018 Homecoming Queen. She is the daughter of Jennifer and John Lindig. Her First Attendant is Guthrie, daughter of Charli Landis and Timothy Guthrie, II. Second Attendant is Barthalow, daughter of Betina Scott.
A very emotional Lindig thanked her parents and everyone who had helped her get ready for the contest.
