Picnic held to celebrate Breastfeeding Awareness Month

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton WIC office celebrated Breastfeeding Awareness Month with a picnic on Aug. 7 at Himebaugh Park.
“We decided to do something low key this year and not have a lot of vendors,” said Willa Hamersley, WIC director. “Since we had it here at the park, families could come take a walk or play some of the games we have set up like cornhole.”
Help Me Grow helped with the games and the Junior Leaders 4-H Club was there to do face painting.
One of the youngsters enjoying games was 2-year-old Logan Guthrie.
“We came to support breastfeeding in the community,” said Paula Guthrie, Logan’s mom. “We need more support and education.”
Logan was taking turns at a football toss game with Kylie Greenawalt, who will be in the fourth grade at Coshocton Elementary School.
“I am always looking for something fun for me and her to do since I work,” said May West, Greenawalt’s mother.
The picnic was open to the public and included hot dogs, watermelon and veggies with a little bit of dip.
“We wanted to have fun with the community and let people know that WIC is here to help with breastfeeding and with whatever else we can help someone with,” Hamersley said.
Food for the event was donated by Kraft Heinz Company, ALDI US and Kyle Libby – State Farm Insurance. The tent covering tables provided by the Coshocton County Commissioners was donated by Peddicord Rice Auction Realty.
“We just wanted to do something different this year and this gave families a chance to get out and enjoy fresh air and sunshine together,” Hamersley said.
