VFW to sponsor two nationwide contests
COSHOCTON – The local VFW will again take part in the national Patriot’s Pen Contest and the Voice of Democracy Contest. Deadline for both contests is Oct. 31. All entries must be returned to your school by Oct. 28.
The Patriot’s Pen Contest is for students who are in sixth through eighth grade and gives students the opportunity to write an essay on a different theme each year. This year’s theme is “Why I Honor the American Flag”. The national winners of the contest will receive at least $500 with the first place winner receiving $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C.
Essays must be 300 to 400 words, no exceptions. Essays under or over this word limit will be eliminated. Poetry is not acceptable. Forms and more information may be picked up at your local school or at the local VFW Post.
The 2018 – 2019 Voice of Democracy theme is “Why My Vote Matters”. This contest is open to all students in grades nine through 12. Record your original three to five minute essay on an audio CD or a flash drive. Submit the recording, typed essay, and entry form to your school or the local VFW Post. Music, singing, or poetry is not acceptable.
Prizes and scholarships can be awarded at the post, district, state, and national level department. State winners receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. in March 2019 where students will receive scholarships from the VFW and its auxiliary. Forms and more information may be picked up at your local school or at the local VFW Post.
