Sheriff asked to share concerns with Issue 1 at council meeting

COSHOCTON – Safety Service Director Max Crown gave a paving update at Coshocton City Council’s Sept. 24 meeting.

“Paving started last week as part of our (north end) revitalization project,” he said. “We got it down last Saturday, but the rain has forced us to stop.”

Crown also shared that a gazebo was installed at the city’s new Waterworks Park. Councilman Tom Grier asked if it was far enough away from the river to avoid flooding and Crown assured him that it would be ok. Mayor Steve Mercer added that the city is planning to install the same style of gazebo at River Front Park.

Mayor Mercer asked Sheriff Tim Rogers, who was at the meeting, if he could share with council about state Issue 1, which will appear on ballots Tuesday, Nov. 6.

“I don’t have my bullet points with me, but basically it’s a bad idea,” Sheriff Rogers said. “It takes felonies away from us for drug possessions and makes them misdemeanors. That prohibits us from doing what we need to as law enforcement. There is a lot more wrong with this amendment than good with it.”

At the meeting council also decided to table ordinance 35-18 regarding vagrants in the City of Coshocton. They then gave a second reading to ordinance 36-18 prohibiting camping on any property owned by the City of Coshocton.
