Harvest festival this Saturday at Coshocton Farmers Market
COSHOCTON – The colorful autumn season is here with apples and plums, pumpkins and winter squash, Indian corn, and chrysanthemums in purple, red, yellow, and gold. Coshocton Farmers Market downtown will celebrate the season this Saturday, Oct. 6 with a harvest festival.
Children are especially invited to come in costume and go trick-or-treating among the market vendors. CECA (Coshocton Environmental and Community Awareness) will paint faces with fun designs, and kids can build and decorate scarecrows with people from Clary Gardens. Other organizations participating include Pomerene Center for the Arts, Coshocton Public Library, WIC (Women, Infants, and Children), Coshocton County Farm Bureau, and the Johnson-Humerickhouse Museum. The special festival activities begin at 9 a.m. at the Pomerene artPark across from the farmers market on Main Street.
Market vendors offer fall produce such as squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, sweet and hot peppers, lettuce, and kale. Home bakers sell a variety of cookies, pies, breads, and candies. Other items for sale include honey, maple syrup, and homemade jam, as well as unique gifts such as homemade soaps and lip balms, painted plaques, hanging kitchen towels, and more. Coshocton Farmers Market is open every Saturday morning through October 27.

Maple Roasted Chicken & Acorn Squash
1 medium acorn squash
4 medium carrots, chopped (about 2 cups)
1 medium onion, cut into 1-inch pieces
6 bone-in chicken thighs
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Cut the squash in half lengthwise; remove and discard the seeds. Cut each half crosswise into half-inch slices; discard the ends. Place the squash, carrots, and onion in a greased 13-x-9-inch baking pan. Top with the chicken, skin side down. Roast for 10 minutes.
Turn the chicken over; drizzle with maple syrup and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast 25 to 30 minutes longer, or until a thermometer inserted in chicken reads 170-175 degrees and vegetables are tender.
