Children invited to crochet with Jessie Tubbs

| February 15, 2013

COSHOCTON – The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is offering two children’s crochet classes from 1 to 3 p.m. March 9 and 15. The class is geared toward boys and girls in grades four through seven.

Participants will make fingerless mittens on March 9 and IPod-sized bags or pouches on March 15. It’s time to take crocheting out of its box. It’s not just for women and not just a means of making hats and Afghans. Furthermore, besides being fun, varied and useful, crochet is beneficial on three levels. The obvious one is that the process results in an object of practicality and beauty to enjoy.

Another benefit is the sense of accomplishment and confidence the artisan experiences after having learned a new skill. However, the most important benefit, especially for children, is that the process itself develops coordination, problem solving and math agility. Learning different stitches, analyzing patterns, reading patterns and planning color or design all develop abstract thinking.

Instructor Jessie Tubbs has been crocheting since she was a child and has taught many adults and children to crochet. She is known for her whimsical animal hats that can be seen on Facebook at Hooked on Hats and More. The class fee is $5 (Supply fee is $2, or bring your own supplies). Prepaid registration is required by the Thursday before each class.

The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is located in Roscoe Village at 300 N. Whitewoman St. Museum hours are 1 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. To register or for more information, call 622-8710. The Ohio Arts Council helped fund this program with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
