Upper Room Church starts MPact Girls’ Club
COSHOCTON – “I think of it as Girl Scouts with a Christian focus,” said Karen Casey about the MPact Girls’ Club that the Upper Room Church recently started.
“We have a class for every age group from kindergarten through 12th grade. We wanted something fun for the girls to do. The church has Royal Rangers for boys so we started MPact for the girls,” said Casey, who teaches the “Friends” class which is grades six through eight. “We have high school girls that come to the outings, but they haven’t been able to come to meetings, yet.”
“It’s also important that girls know serving God and coming to church can be fun,” said Casey. “Anyone is welcome. Parents can drop their girls off and come back or they can join the adult Bible class during that hour. My class gets a charm necklace when they start and after they complete a unit, they receive a charm to put on the necklace. The lessons are done during class time.”
The group also plans fun activities outside of the regular meetings. They went to the Coshocton County Fair together and also attended the “Compassion Experience” in Zanesville. Each girl gets a head set to listen to as they go from room to room. Each room features a different country and the girls learned about the country and what the kids in that country like to do. At the end of the day, the girls chose a girl from Africa to be their pen pal.
“We will read letters from her during our meetings and write back to her,” said Casey.
“I think it’s great we didn’t really have to ask people to teach classes. When people heard about it, they came to us and said which age group they would like to teach. I know God wanted us to do this because it all just fell into place so easily.”
Two of the girls from the Friends Class are Aerianna Braxton, 12, and Savannah Langdon, 12. Braxton said she likes to come to the class because she gets to learn about God and sponsor kids. Learning about God and hanging out with her friends is why Langdon enjoys the class.
The MPact meetings are held the second and fourth Thursday of every month from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the church at 803 Vine St. For more information about MPact or Royal Rangers, call the church at 740-610-0082 and leave a message with your phone number.
