Holocaust survivor to speak at OEPA hearing

| October 15, 2018

COSHOCTON – Coshocton Environmental Group hosts activist Phyllis Glazer and represents community concerns at OEPA Hearing, Wednesday, Oct. 17, Noon – 3 p.m., Coshocton Village Suites, 115 N. Water St., Coshocton.

Glazer will be coming to our community to testify before the OEPA.

She will be speaking about the record of the current owners and operators of the Buckeye Brine injection wells when they ran a company called Gibraltar Chemical during the 1990’s in her small town of Winona, Texas.

Coshocton Environmental and Community Awareness, a local 501c3 environmental education group known as CECA is making her available to the public, local leaders, and the media.

Glazer, a Holocaust survivor, began leading a grassroots effort to shut down Gibraltar Chemical after she and her son were exposed to a toxic gas release from their operations on their way to his school near Winona.

The exposure led to the destruction of her nasal septum, hanging lesions in her mouth and throat, and deformed toenails that grew into horn-like curls and fell off.

She found that the minority community living near Gibraltar Chemical had suffered from exposure for many years and adults and children suffered from cancers, respiratory illnesses, and birth defects.

Using her personal inheritance she organized a local citizen’s group, Mothers Organized to Stop Environmental Sins, (MOSES).

She began a protracted legal battle and enlisted media and legislative support for their effort.

With the help of the local citizens, Glazer brought enough pressure on regulators to eventually stop Gibraltar’s operations and the injection wells were sold and eventually shut down.

She continues to support grassroots efforts to protect vulnerable communities from harm.

She will also be available to the press Thursday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. at the High School Entrance before the OEPA meeting.
