Coshocton Canal Court chosen at Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival

COSHOCTON – Six beautiful young ladies braved chilly temperatures on Saturday, Oct. 20, to compete for the honor of being named Coshocton Canal Queen, Princess and attendants.
Each contestant was judged on her costume, an essay and her poise. The young ladies vying to be the canal princess had to present a one and a half to three minute speech about a young girl who may have lived in the canal era. They had to include a description of their costume in their speech. The older girls’ speeches had to be three to five minutes long.
The 2017 Canal Princess Savannah Langdon, and the 2017 Canal Queen Maddy Meiser, both gave farewell speeches that thanked their families and sponsors and also shared a few memories. Langdon shared that the last year had been so exciting for her and she had a great time. “I attended multiple events, but my favorite was the Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival. I’ll always have amazing memories of being your canal princess.”
Meiser said she travelled more than 7,300 miles and attended 66 festivals and events over the last year. “It has been a privilege and a pleasure to share Coshocton County. The friendships I have made will always be treasured. I have learned so much and have gained more self-confidence. Thank you, Coshocton County, for being a hometown worth bragging about.”
Special awards were handed out while the judges made their final decisions. The essays were judged by a local high school teacher who said every essay was very well written. First place was won by Brianna Fink, princess candidate and Sophia Meiser, queen candidate. The costume awards were chosen by a local seamstress. Princess candidate Emmilia Flores and queen candidate Sophia Meiser were chosen as the best costumes.
Lydia Dawson and Emmilia Flores won the fundraising trophies, with Flores being the highest overall. The spirit award is giving to the girl who is kind and always has a smile. It is chosen by the candidates. Princess candidate Jazlene Brown and queen candidate Sophia Meiser were chosen for the spirit awards.
When the judges’ scores were totaled, Jazlene Brown, daughter of Dustin and Casey Brown, was chosen as the 2018 Coshocton Canal Princess. Her attendants are: First Attendant Brianna Fink, daughter of Denny and Amanda Fink, and Second Attendant Emmilia Flores, daughter of Jessie Tubbs and Scott Flores.
The 2018 Coshocton Canal Queen is Sophia Meiser, daughter of Tony and Amanda Meiser. Her attendants are: First Attendant Lydia Dawson, daughter of Wes and Dawn Dawson and Second Attendant Lynsey Stonebraker, daughter of Ron and Amy Stonebraker.
Completing the canal court is Junior Queen Karli Stickdorn, daughter of Ryan and Mandi Stickdorn, and her attendants: First Attendant Layla Moore, daughter of Kim McDonald and Mitchell Moore, and Second Attendant Natalie Huston, daughter of Denise and Sam Stotts and Bill and Wanita Huston. The junior queen and her attendants were chosen earlier Saturday.
Stickdorn said she was excited about being named junior queen and she was cold, but she couldn’t wait to travel and meet new friends. “The questions they (the judges) asked were hard, like why did I want to be junior queen.” She also said she was nervous that morning, but now she is just excited and happy.
As the new canal princess, Brown said she was super excited. “I can’t wait to represent Roscoe Village and Coshocton at the different events. And I can’t wait to do the luncheons.” She was the2017 Junior Queen Second Attendant so she is used to talking to people about the area. “All of the festivals are amazing and fun.”
Queen Sophia couldn’t describe just how she was feeling after she was chosen. “I’m excited. Excited. Overwhelmed. It’s so cool to be named queen after my sister was queen last year. She set really high standards for me to meet.” Meiser said she couldn’t wait to start traveling and meeting new people. “There are so many places I want to see and I’m excited to get into it.”
