Pancake day helps Kiwanis Club fulfill mission
COSHOCTON – Coshocton Kiwanis Club members were busy serving up pancakes and sausages and raising money for a good cause on Nov. 8 during their annual pancake day at the Elks.
“We are usually the busiest at dinner time, but we’ve had a steady flow,” said Doug Speicher, who is the immediate past co-president of the Kiwanis Club.
He enjoys seeing the groups of students who are able to come to pancake day because of members of the club.
“It’s a lot of third graders, but we get some too from Sacred Heart, the Christian School and Hopewell,” Speicher said. “They are sponsored by people in the club and that way the kids don’t have to pay any money to come eat.”
Area youth also are involved in helping the Kiwanis Club members serve customers.
“We couldn’t do this without the Key Club members (from Coshocton High School),” Speicher said. “We have about 40-50 of them help us throughout the day. They take care of people out here (in the dining room) and pretty much take care of the kids when they come in with their classes.”
Amanda Kittel, a senior member of the Key Club, was happy to help out at pancake day.
“I really enjoy seeing the community and I just love to help people,” she said.
Junior Lillian Whitcomb also was glad to help.
“I like seeing all the people come together whether it’s to eat or work,” she said.
They both were able to enjoy some pancakes before working their shift at the event.
“They are very spongy,” Kittel said.
Whitcomb added that the pancakes absorb syrup well.
“They also are very filling,” she said.
This was Connie Bratton and Trecia Atwood’s first time at pancake day. The sisters both work at Interim and received tickets for the event at the company’s employee appreciation banquet. Connie’s daughter-in-law Kelly Bratton also is the Kiwanis Club’s secretary.
“I’m glad we came,” Connie said. “I’m on my second plate.”
Atwood agreed with her.
“The pancakes were very good, but I’m on my seconds with sausage,” she said.
Funds raised form pancake day help the Kiwanis Club fulfill its mission of serving the children of the world.
