River View hosts first home bowling tournament
COSHOCTON – River View High School hosted its first bowling tournament on Jan. 5 at Legacy Lanes against teams from Newark, Heath, Dover and Tuscarawas Central Catholic.
“I’m really excited to be home,” said Allie Murray, a sophomore on the girls’ team at RVHS. “It’s different when you’re at other lanes, but we know ours here.”
This is the first year for bowling as a varsity sport at River View and Murray was one of the students who helped push to get it started.
“I’ve always loved bowling,” she said. “I like seeing all the new people to the sport and how they’ve learned so fast and have become dedicated to it.”
The girls’ team is coached by Bill Stufflebean.
“All the girls except two are new to bowling,” he said. “They started from scratch and the varsity squad has become very solid.”
One of the team members new to the sport is Claire Warschauer. She and fellow senior Natalie Mickley are captains of the team.
“I decided to do this because I could still do my softball offseason work and I knew it was a sport you could do for the rest of your life,” said Warschauer. “I’ve really liked it so far. It’s different than any other sport I’ve done. You help the team, but it’s really you out there with the ball against the pins. It’s an individual, but yet a team sport.”
Junior Emmie Brenly also is new to bowling.
“I thought it would be cool to be part of since it’s the first year,” she said. “It’s been a lot of fun. I’m really enjoying it.”
The boys bowling team is coached by Scott Fowler, who graduated from River View.
“I’m passionate about bowling,” he said. “I bowled in college and in the Air Force. I wanted to bring this opportunity to the kids. I’m very proud of them. They’ve really stepped up from the last tournament to this one. They were all ready.”
Just like the girls team, the boys also have several athletes who are new to the sport of bowling.
“I started three weeks before the season,” said Eli Giles, a senior and one of the team’s captains. “I was excited to do a different sport and this is the first time I’ve gotten to be captain of anything.”
Logan Moses, another senior and team captain, said he had a little bit of bowling experience before joining the team.
“When I heard they were going to have a team, I knew I had to join,” he said. “I find a lot of joy in bowling. We have a good team. We cooperate well. When someone isn’t having a good day on the lanes, we lift them up.”
Sophomore Isaac Giles decided to join the team with his older brother and is glad he did.
“I like seeing what people can do with the ball and how they can make it spin,” he said. “Two-handed bowlers are awesome to watch.”
The boys and girls teams both practice at Legacy Lanes and Stufflebean is thankful for the business’ support.
“We are very grateful for their hospitality,” he said. “They have done a tremendous job of supporting these two new teams and they also host a college team from Muskingum University. That’s been nice too because they get to see our kids and they like a lot of them.”
The Lady Bears took second overall in the tournament. They were seeded third of seven teams entering the semifinals and defeated second seed Indian Valley to advance to the championship round.

The RV Junior Varsity Lady Bears placed sixth out of seven varsity teams the tournament.

Qualifying round of three regular 10 pin games and six baker games.
Top four advanced to a best of three Baker game semifinal playoff.
Top two advanced to a best of three baker game championship match.
First seed Dover won the tournament after defeating the third seeded Lady Bears in the two of the three championship baker games.
